July 2, 2021, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte – Gov. Damian G. Mercado formally turned-over the Hogstel livelihood project assistance to the Samahan ng Magbubukid sa Manalog (SaMa-SaMa), represented by Mr. Danilo R. Solante, President of the group.
The Hogstel Project was implemented in 2020 to help augment farmers’ income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the project, one hogstel facility was established in each of the 10 pilot LGUs; each hogstel houses 10 stalls that can accommodate 5 hog fatteners each, or 50 hogs per hogstel building. It aims to increase farmer-beneficiary household incomes by at least PhP 7,000 per crop season, or one crop every 3.5 months.
The other objective of the project is to help the province attain food security.
The Provincial Government of Southern Leyte shouldered the cost of constructing the hogstel building, and provided each farmer-beneficiary with 5 piglets for fattening as well as feeds for the first cycle. Cost of piglets and feeds for succeeding crop seasons are generated from the sales proceeds.
With the assistance of LGU Hinunangan, SaMa-SaMa has expanded their enterprise to include marketing. It has established a meat shop at the municipal market.
