MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Apr 1 (PIA) - The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office together with the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP), led in the earthquake and fire drills in Southern Leyte Provincial Hospital (SLPH) in the morning of March 27.

According to PDRRM Officer Danila Atienza, " this is first time that we have honed our capabilities to respond to natural calamities in a hospital scenario, hence, these earthquake and fire drill at Southern Leyte Provincial Hospital."

In time with the nationwide earthquake drill, PDRRMO held its participation at the new provincial hospital as requests coming from the SLPH management came in less than one week, he said, while the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) is also observing its Fire Prevention Month in March.

The said drills were participated in by almost a hundred medical staff and employees at SLPH, though the in-patients were not involved in the mock evacuation procedures yet, Atienza informed.

Atienza emphasized that "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes: 1) DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!); 2) Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table; and 3) HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.

SLPH Head Dr.Imelda Rodriguez learned from the drills that the hospital needs to set-up a big siren facility so as to cover the one-hectare health facility in real time advisories in the event of occurrence of earthquakes and fires.

The drills were also participated by several army reservists of the AFP, who are trasked to manage the traffic in the location of the disaster response drill,it was learned.

Meanwhile, the city government of Maasin thru its City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) also held their earthquake drill simultaneously at the city hall together with the city employees.
