MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Jan. 30 (PIA) –Around 288 sports delegates from the city of Maasin kicked off this morning, January 30, for Baybay City, Leyte to participate in the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) to be conducted on February 1-7, 2015.
The sports delegation from Maasin City include 236 athletes from Elementary and High School Department, and coaches and trainers in each sports event, totaling to 288, City Sports Council staff Daryl Cinco said.
The week-long sports event to be competed by Maasin City include arnis, athletics, billiards. Boxing, badminton, chess, taekwando, swimming, archery, table tennis, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, football, futsal, volleyball, badminton, among others.
It was learned that silver and gold medalists are expected to qualify and compete in the Palarong Pambansa set to be held in Tagum city, Davao del Norte.. Last year's Palarong Pambansa was hosted by the province of Laguna.
Previously, athletes from Maasin City who won in the regional athletic meet received incentives from the city government of Maasin, she added.
Palarong Pambansa is an annual sports program by Department of Education (DepEd) in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). It also serves as a grassroots program where potential national pool athletes are discovered and a venue for college schools to tap varsity recruits.
