MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Sept. 3 (PIA) -- A kick-off activity of the month-long Measles-Rubella and Oral Polio Vaccine Mass Immunization was conducted by Maasin City health officials and the Provincial Health Services Office, September 1, 2014 at the city gymnasium here.
The activity conducted after the Monday Flag Ceremony was a kick-off activity of the month-long immunization month this September to decrease the incidence of measles if not totally eliminate it, not only in the locality but throughout the country.
Rachel K. Tan, City Health Unit I Supervising nurse disclosed that a ceremonial immunization was conducted to at least five targeted children from Barangay Tunga-tunga which was administered by City Mayor Maloney Samaco and assisted by some local health personnel.
She enjoined all parents to bring their children to the nearest Barangay Health Centersto and avail of the free vaccines from the Department of Health.
She said that 9 months to below 5 years or 59 months children should get a dose of measles/German measles vaccine and 2 drops of Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) for 0 to below 5 years old children.
"Targeted children will get the vaccines for free," she said. They are targeting 3 days in every barangay to give the vaccines to children, Tan added.
The City health Unit is also focusing on high-risk barangays such as disaster-prone areas identified during their meeting. These areas in Rizal, Asuncion, Mambajao, Combado, Lib-og and Tunga-tunga.
The Measles-Rubella and OPV Mass Immunization Month launching was also attended by Provincial health Officer II Dr. Feliciano John Matibag, PHO I Dr, Noel Lumen, City Health Officers Dr. Francilisa Tan, Dr. Teodulo Salas and Dr. Jocelyn Orito, among other health personnel. (aen/rgc/PIA8-SoLeyte)
