MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, August 4 (PIA) - The Philippine Red Cross (PRC)- Southern Leyte Chapter recently established the Red Cross 143/Volunteer Service- Southern Leyte Chapter to intensify its working force down at the grassroots level in the province and organized its officers, as well.

" Red Cross 143 is one of the major program of the PRC that teaches the people to look after and care for their respective community," OIC Administrator Jonas Maco disclosed.

He added that said Red Cross 143 is a movement that empowers each barangay to be prepared to respond to any calamity and disaster that may strike at any given time.

He added that 143 will recruit 44 volunteers in one barangay with one leader and 43 members that serves as its eyes, ears, hands and feet of Red Cross in each barangay.

He said further that 143 volunteer will be harnessed in three aspects – disaster preparedness and response, health and welfare and voluntary blood donations to effective and compassionate in extending assistance in their areas of responsibilities.

Meanwhile, the local Red Cross 143 set of officers were also organized as follows: President– Karl Pete Francis Carayo, Vice-President – Eric Villafuerte, Secretary– Eula Mae Maquelabit, Treasurer- Rosario Pejoles, Auditor- Lito Serenio and PIO- Bong Pedalino.

Southern Leyte covers 500 barangays and hundreds of public and private learning institutions and establishments sprouting across the province, it was learned.
