LIMASAWA, Southern Leyte, April 15 (PIA) -- This historical island is poised to add another first aside from being the venue of the first Easter Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, March 31, 500 years ago in the Philippines and in Asia.

On March 29, 1521, or two days before the iconic scene of the Easter Sunday Mass, the “Kasi-Kasi” was conducted between the traveler Magellan and Rajah Kolambu, king of Limasawa, and kasi-kasi meant blood compact signifying brotherhood, according to Usec. Anthony Gerard Gonzales of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas (OPAV).

“Historical accounts are silent on procedure of the custom, but the remarkable feature is that the two leaders both drank wine in mixture of blood drawn from either their arm or chest,” Gonzales said during the unveiling of the Limasawa quincentennial marker in the afternoon of March 31 at the municipal grounds in barangay Cabulihan.

History books referred to the Legaspi-Sikatuna blood compact in Bohol in the year 1565 as the first act of using drops of blood to sign a treaty of friendship and brotherhood among visitor and the host king.

The kasi-kasi incident in Limasawa 44 years earlier as narrated by Usec Gonzales based on the writings of Antonio Pigafetta may challenge historians to revisit this particular moment in our collective past.

“Magellan responded to the request of Rajah Kolambu to enter into blood compact most likely because he had nothing to depend on but the graciousness and authority of the king of Mazaua, who assisted them personally in going to Cebu on April 4,” Gonzales further said.

Meanwhile, in his regular report over Laging Handa Network Briefing Wednesday, April 14, Usec. Gonzales once again cited the significance of Rajah Kolambu’s role in the bigger picture of circling the globe at that time.

“If Magellan and his crew did not receive any assistance from Rajah Kolambu of Limasawa and his men, the expedition could not have been able to continue in their journey and could not have proved that the earth is round,” Gonzales pointed out. (ldl/mmp/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
