MAASIN CITY, April 12 (PIA) -- Under this year’s General Appropriations Act (GAA), the two legislative districts in the province of Southern Leyte have their own budgets for infrastructure projects through the regular funds of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Southern Leyte District Engineering Office (DPWH-SLDEO).

This was revealed by Engr. Manolo Rojas, the new district engineer of DPWH-SLDEO, at the Kapihan sa PIA Wednesday last week.

District 1, which covers Maasin City up to Bontoc town, including the island municipality of Limasawa, got P938.97 million of the budget pie, while District 2, the areas from Sogod to Panaon and Pacific towns, had P1.3 billion.

Projects in convergence with other government agencies like the DepEd, DA, and DOT, among others, whose infra funds are downloaded in the construction agency, are not included in the amount mentioned, Rojas added.

This totals P3.42 billion, the biggest share among DPWH offices in the region, Rojas said.

This was the first time the province enjoyed separate outlays from its two divisions.

But Rojas clarified that even with two different infra funds for each of the legislative territories, there is still one, single engineering district for the entire province, for now, since there is still a need for an enabling law to craft the formation of a second engineering district.

He also explained the bigger allocation of the second district, saying the area has longer primary roads and national highways to maintain. (ldl/mmp/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
