MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, June 13 (PIA) -- The Philippine Red Cross – Southern Leyte Chapter is getting ready to participate in a global campaign for blood donation by conducting a bloodletting activity itself Saturday, June 14, the date set aside as World Blood Donors’ Day.
This year, the call for massive blood donation is focused on efforts to prevent unwanted maternal deaths for pregnant mothers due to birth delivery, said Jan Elecito, Donor Recruitment Officer of the local Red Cross.
Mothers who are anemic and are due to give birth, and also those who will undergo ceasarian operation, are in life and death situation because of massive loss of blood, and the services of the Red Cross for its blood products can prove crucial to save lives, Elicito said during the cable TV program Action Center Kapihan sa PIA last week.
Jonas Macu, the Provincial Red Cross Administrator, said he had sent invitations to various organizations, youth groups, young professionals, and other organized socio-civic bodies for their members to voluntarily donate blood.
But aside from a massive bloodletting activity, which will be held at the SJC Covered Court, World Blood Donor’s Day also honors the “Galloner’s group”, either individuals or institutions, who have contributed at least 9 bags of blood donation to the Red Cross, in a fitting recognition ceremony, Macu said.
Any individual aged 18 to 65 can give 450 cc of his or her blood after an examination by a physician for a clean bill of health.
The theme of this year’s Blood Donor’s Day is “Safe Blood for Saving Mothers,” it was learned. (GTT/MMP/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
