MAASIN CITY, FEB. 18 (PIA) -- The Salvacion Oppus Yniguez Memorial Provincial Hosptal (SOYMPH) in barangay Dongon, this city, has provided an isolation room for those seeking consultation on mild sore throat, fever, common cold, and cough.
These respiratory ailments have no cause for concern in ordinary times, but under the shadow of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Department of Health (DOH) made sure Level 2 health centers, such as SOYMPH, provide such a space.
“This serves as the holding area while doctors examine the person before referring, when needed, to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) in Tacloban,” said Joewil Napuli, the designated spokesperson on COVID-19 at the provincial health office.
Napuli said he went to a private wellness facility in the city right away when he was informed of a potential case, but the walk-in patient was no longer there on his arrival, having been transported already to the regional center.
The quick referral was the right and proper thing to do, Napuli said.
That person has since been discharged for having complied with the mandatory 14-day quarantine period, her health found in good condition.
In a related development, a top ranking personnel in one of the private hospitals in the city told PIA they handled the said out-patient with grace and proper care, knowing fully well the DOH’s procedures and guidelines on the matter.
The ambulance driver, the nurses, and all those who traveled with the patient in going to Tacloban were all wearing the proper attire complete with face masks, the high-ranking medical officer pointed out, in compliance with DOH protocol.
A separate, open tent in front of the hospital was put up as a special receiving area, also in accordance with the DOH call, the officer further stated.
On learning that the person who came to them was cleared and eventually released, everyone in the hospital, himself included, was greatly relieved.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to remind everyone to follow important precautions.
These include frequent washing of hands with soap, covering mouth and nose with tissue when coughing and sneezing, throwing the used tissue at the bin, and washing of hands immediately after.
“COVID-19 can spread to countries with hot and humid climates, as well as cold and dry” ones, the WHO reminded. (LDL/MMP/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
