MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Feb 21 (PIA) -- In observance of the 21st Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Week every 2nd week of of February, the Philippine National Police – Maasin City Police Station conducted a lecture and film showing to selected schools in Maasin City, February 20, 2017.
PNP Family Juvenile Gender and Devleopment and Asst. Women and Child Protection Desk Officer PO3 Hazel Conato told that the film showing presented was “Komal,” sexual abuse cases in India, to grades IV, V and VI pupils in Rosa Espina de Yñiguez Memorial School and Maasin City Central School. The said activity helped them recognize the safe and bad touch and how to respond to it accordingly, Conato noted. Conato was accompanied by PO1 Lunisa O. Guinte, WCPD Investigator. It was learned that this year’s 21st observance of the Child Sexual Abuse and Awareness Week carries the theme, “We are the Solution,” which emphasizes the significance of “We” which pertains to the convergence of efforts from every individual in the community in ending child sexual abuse. In Maasin City reported cases of child abuse as for the year 2015 was recorded at 27, while sexually-abused cases was recorded at 7, City Social Welfare Office Focal Person Crissa Baragas reported. Meanwhile, data from the DSWD-Central Office’ Reported Child Abuse Cases served, showed a 21% (1,181) reduction of child abuse cases from 2012 – 2015. It recorded 5,555 child abuse cases and 1,378 sexually-abused cases for year 2012; while for year 2015 showed 4,374 and 1,147 for child and sexually-abused cases, respectively. (ajc/rgc/PIA8-SoLeyte)
